Newcastle to Amsterdam Mini Cruise: 2026 Guide
How the DFDS Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise works: sailing times, hours ashore, cabins, a tight city plan and how to add a hotel night.

Sail out of the Tyne at teatime, sleep in your own cabin and wake up off the Dutch coast with Amsterdam a short coach ride away. The DFDS mini cruise from North Shields is a two-night, no-flights break for couples, friends and families, and it’s easy to stretch with a night in an Amsterdam hotel.

Why go
Why the Amsterdam mini cruise works
No early flight, no baggage allowance: you turn up at the Port of Tyne in the afternoon and the holiday starts in your cabin. DFDS says there are no luggage restrictions on the mini cruise, which is handy for a big Christmas shop.
The trade-off is time: one short day makes it a taster, not a full city break. Want longer? Add a hotel night (see below).

How it works
How the DFDS mini cruise works today
DFDS runs the route with King Seaways and Princess Seaways, both refreshed in 2024. The crossing takes around 16 hours 45 minutes. This is DFDS’s published mini cruise timetable:
- Day 1: check-in from 14:30, closing at 16:15. The ship leaves North Shields at 17:00.
- Day 2: arrive in IJmuiden at 09:45. The coach leaves for Amsterdam at 10:15 and heads back from the city at 15:30. The ship sails at 17:30.
- Day 3: breakfast from 07:30, then you arrive in North Shields at 09:15.
DFDS warns that time ashore can vary with border control procedures (see the FAQ). Check the latest times on the DFDS mini cruise page.
The coach into Amsterdam
IJmuiden is on the coast, about 40 to 45 minutes from the city by coach. The coach drops you at De Ruijterkade Oost, on the waterfront side of Amsterdam Centraal, at about 11:00. That leaves you roughly four and a half hours before the 15:30 coach back. The transfer is part of the mini cruise package, but DFDS shows the coach price separately after the cabin price when you book.
Cabins, food and entertainment
Every cabin is en suite. Here are the options from the DFDS cabin guide:
- Economy: sleeps 2 to 4 in bunks.
- Double bed: for couples, inside or sea view.
- Sea view: sleeps up to 5 in bunks.
- Pet friendly: up to 4 people and 2 medium-sized dogs.
- Commodore and Commodore De Luxe: the premium cabins.
For food, Explorer’s Kitchen is an all-you-can-eat international buffet. The North Sea Bistro offers waiter service and a seasonal menu, and Coffee Crew Café serves Starbucks coffee. Meals aren’t in the basic price, but DFDS says you save by pre-booking (see the restaurant page).
In the evening there are bars with live music and DJ sets, cinemas, a games area and Duty Free. For children there’s soft play and a Kids’ Club with treasure hunts and face painting. Wi-Fi is sold in packages on board.
What it costs
DFDS runs regular sales on this route, so there is nearly always an offer on. When we checked on 14 October 2026, the best deal was the Holiday Pirates offer: the mini cruise from £79 for two people (£39.50 each) or £129 for four, in an inside cabin, for travel until 31 December 2026, booked by 20 December. Thursday to Saturday sailings add £25 per booking, and you quote “Holiday Pirates” when you book. DFDS’s own 50% off autumn sale (from £56 per person, two sharing, £4 ETS surcharge included) takes its last bookings on 15 October 2026. After that, the next DFDS sale usually follows within a few weeks, so check the DFDS offers page. Other cabins cost a little more, Commodore cabins are excluded and the coach is added at booking. Prices change daily, so check today’s price.
Christmas market mini cruises
At the time of writing, DFDS’s UK site wasn’t showing a dedicated 2026 Christmas market mini cruise, but the regular sailings run through December. Amsterdam isn’t a big traditional market city. Expect pop-up winter markets, festive lights and an ice rink on Museumplein by the Rijksmuseum.
The Amsterdam Light Festival runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, with the lights on from 4.30pm. The coach leaves at 15:30, so you’ll only really see it with a hotel night.
Getting there
Getting to the Port of Tyne and on to Amsterdam
DFDS sails from the International Passenger Terminal at Royal Quays, North Shields (NE29 6EE), about 30 minutes from Newcastle city centre.
- Bus 327Go North East’s ferry shuttle leaves from Bewick Street, by Newcastle Central Station, at 14:30 and 15:30 and takes about 25 minutes. The return leaves the terminal at 09:30. It doesn’t run on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day. Check the timetable.
- MetroPercy Main is about 1.2 miles away (roughly a 25-minute walk) and Meadow Well about a mile. With heavy bags, take a short taxi from the station. Plan your trip with Nexus.
- DrivingThere’s a car park at the terminal. It usually can’t be pre-booked and you pay on your return, so check the daily rate when you arrive.
- By trainGet the train to Newcastle Central, then the 14:30 bus 327. It arrives well before check-in closes at 16:15.
From IJmuiden: the DFDS coach is easiest. The official I amsterdam guide puts a taxi at around €60 each way. Otherwise, trains from Driehuis station, about 6km from the port by taxi, take around half an hour to Amsterdam. Check routes on 9292.
Prefer to fly one way? Some people sail out, stay over and fly home from Schiphol to Newcastle. Compare one-way fares on KAYAK (example date; change it to suit). Trains from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal take about 17 minutes. Newcastle Airport is on the Metro, so you can get home without a car.

Your plan
Day-by-day plan
Day 1: sail away
Catch the 14:30 bus 327, check in and settle in before the 17:00 sailing. Have dinner at the buffet or a booked Bistro table, then catch some live music or a film. Set an alarm, because the coach leaves at 10:15.
Day 2: a tight plan for Amsterdam
- Before 10:15: have breakfast, disembark, clear border control and board the coach.
- Around 11:00: arrive at De Ruijterkade Oost. Note exactly where the coach stops, because you’ll catch it back from there.
- 11:15: take a one-hour canal cruise from near Centraal.
- 12:30: head to the Jordaan for lunch, with apple pie or bitterballen.
- 13:30: go to your Anne Frank House slot or browse the Nine Streets.
- 14:45: stroll back via Singel and Damrak.
- 15:15: be at the coach stop. The ship sails at 17:30.
Museum version: take the tram to Museumplein and spend 11:30 to 13:30 in the Rijksmuseum. Have lunch nearby, then be on the tram back by 15:00.
Day 3: home for breakfast
Breakfast is from 07:30 and you dock at 09:15. The 327 leaves for Central Station at 09:30.
Stretch it with a hotel night
Sail out on day 1 and spend day 2 and that night in Amsterdam. On day 3, catch the 15:30 coach to the 17:30 sailing, and you’re back at 09:15 on day 4. DFDS sells this as a Cruise & Stay with up to two nights ashore. You can also book the crossings with a gap and add the coach to each leg, but check how the coach works for your dates. You’ll have the evening for the Light Festival and the next morning for a museum.

Save money
Money-saving tips
- Book online in a sale. DFDS runs regular cabin sales on this route, and phone bookings carry a fee.
- Go midweek. Some DFDS offers have added a supplement for Thursday to Saturday travel, so compare Sunday to Wednesday sailings.
- Share the cabin. Four-berth economy or sea view cabins spread the cost for families and friends.
- Pre-book meals. DFDS says pre-booking saves money. Under-3s eat free, and children aged 4 to 11 pay less at the buffet.
- Use the Metro or bus 327. Both are cheaper than a taxi and save two days of parking.
- Tap your bank card in Amsterdam. GVB trams, buses and metro take contactless cards. At the time of writing, GVB capped fares at €10.50 a day.

Amsterdam mini cruise FAQ
Do I need a passport, and what about EES and ETIAS?
Yes, you need a passport. The FCDO says it must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must expire at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) is now in place. On your first trip you may need to give fingerprints and a photo at the border, which takes extra time. Children aged 11 or under aren’t fingerprinted, and registration is free.
When this guide was checked (13 October 2026), the FCDO’s Netherlands entry rules didn’t list ETIAS as a requirement. Check that page and DFDS’s border updates before you travel, and only ever apply for ETIAS through the official EU website.
How long do I really get in Amsterdam?
Around four and a half hours, from about 11:00 to the 15:30 coach. A slow border queue can cut into that, so leave slack at the end.
Which cabin suits a family?
Economy cabins sleep up to 4 and are the cheapest. Sea view cabins sleep up to 5 and have a window. All are en suite, and both restaurants have children’s menus.
What money do I need?
The Netherlands uses the euro. A card with no foreign transaction fees is the easiest way to pay on board and ashore. I amsterdam says tipping is optional, with around 5 to 10% customary in restaurants.
Can I bring the dog?
Pet friendly cabins take up to 4 people and 2 medium-sized dogs. Read DFDS’s pet travel rules, and check how dogs travel on the coach before you book a foot passenger mini cruise.
