Caminito Del Rey

The King’s Little Path

This is not just another Spanish viewpoint.

The Caminito del Rey walk cuts through three dramatic sections of the Gaitanes landscape near Malaga. The walking is controlled and well managed, but the exposure is real: parts of the walkway cling to sheer limestone roughly 100 metres above the Guadalhorce.

Book before you build the rest of the day.

Entry is timed and capacity is limited. Your ticket time refers to the northern control cabin, not the car park or shuttle stop. Allow enough time for parking, the shuttle and the access walk.

The complete journey

Eight moments that turn a ticket into a proper adventure.

The Caminito del Rey walk is wonderfully simple once you understand the logistics: shuttle north, walk south, finish at El Chorro. These are the route decisions and landmarks in the order you meet them.

01
Northern approach

El Kiosko and the long access

Leave the northern shuttle stop and follow the signed long approach towards Gaitanejo. We mapped the longer access for the full journey; the shorter pedestrian tunnel can reduce the approach when open and suitable.

02
Timed entry

Gaitanejo control cabin

Have your personalised ticket and identification ready. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the booked entry time, collect the supplied helmet and listen carefully to the safety briefing.

03
First gorge

Desfiladero de Gaitanejo

The scale changes immediately as the route enters the narrow first canyon. Walkways begin to hug the limestone while the reservoir and river sit far below.

04
Second gorge

Tajo de las Palomas

Pass the historic King’s Bridge area and look across towards the railway tunnels. This is where engineering, water and the route’s royal story begin to overlap.

05
Open landscape

Valle del Hoyo

The gorge releases you into a wider valley. Keep to the authorised path: leaving it is prohibited because of unstable slopes and protected habitat.

06
Final canyon

Glass balcony and Gran Gaitan

The final walkway section brings back the full exposure, with the old path visible beneath parts of the restored route and the railway cutting through the opposite wall.

07
The photograph

Puente Diputado Ignacio Mena

Cross the famous hanging bridge above the gorge. Keep moving, obey staff instructions and do not block the narrow route for photographs.

08
Southern finish

Helmet return and El Chorro

Leave the boardwalk, return the helmet and follow the signed descent into El Chorro. The railway station and southern shuttle stop make the finish straightforward once you have checked live times.

Why it is called the King’s Little Path

Built for workers. Named after a king. Reborn for everyone else.

1901-1905

The original path was built to connect hydroelectric infrastructure through terrain that was otherwise extremely difficult to cross. It was a practical service route, not a tourist attraction.

1921

King Alfonso XIII crossed the route during the inauguration of the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. The name Caminito del Rey grew from that royal visit and stayed.

The landscape is the real headline

Jurassic limestone, narrow gorge walls, railway engineering, reservoirs and the Guadalhorce create a journey that feels much bigger than its distance. Look up as often as you look down: griffon vultures and other birds of prey use the cliffs and thermals.

Plan it without panic

Six details that decide whether the day flows or unravels.

The route itself is controlled and obvious. Most problems happen before the control cabin: people underestimate the access time, arrive at the wrong end or bring something the rules prohibit.

Arrival

Target the control cabin

Your slot is not a car-park arrival time. Build in parking, shuttle queues, the access trail and the required early arrival.

Direction

North to south only

The controlled route runs from Ardales towards El Chorro. Plan the shuttle before or after the walk according to where you park.

Footwear

Closed, secured shoes

Flip-flops, open-backed footwear and high heels are prohibited. Wear grippy shoes that remain firmly attached to the foot.

Weather

Closures can happen

Heavy rain or strong wind can close access. Umbrellas are prohibited, so carry a compact waterproof layer and check official updates.

What stays behind

No poles, drones or large bags

Walking sticks, selfie sticks, tripods, bulky bags, pushchairs and animals are among the prohibited items.

Signal

Download before arrival

Phone coverage is extremely limited in the gorges. Save tickets, route information and transport details offline.

Turn the walk into a Spanish escape

Stay close for calm, or use Malaga for everything else.

The right base depends on whether the Caminito is the entire reason for the trip or one unforgettable day inside a longer Andalusian holiday.
