First, check whether your flights pass the day-trip test
The cheapest flights are not always the ones that make an extreme day trip possible. A low fare is useless if you arrive in Malaga at 4pm or need to return two hours later.
Birmingham Airport currently lists direct flights to Malaga with an approximate journey time of 2 hours 40 minutes. Airlines and schedules change, so search by departure time and return time before comparing the final price.

Getting from Malaga Airport to the city centre
Line A Airport Express bus
The Line A bus currently costs €4 each way, with luggage carried free. Tickets can be purchased on board using cash or a bank card. It is particularly useful because the city-centre stop near Parque de Malaga begins this itinerary close to the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba.
C1 commuter train
The C1 train can reach Malaga in under 15 minutes. Centro Alameda is useful for the southern side of the centre, while Malaga Maria Zambrano serves the main railway station. On an extreme day trip, use whichever sensible service is leaving first.
What should you prioritise?
The Roman Theatre, Alcazaba, Old Town and waterfront fit together naturally. Do not automatically add Gibralfaro Castle, the Picasso Museum and a long beach visit as well. One major attraction, one proper meal and one waterfront stop will create a much better day than racing between everything.
As checked on 19 July 2026, general admission to the Alcazaba is €7. A combined Alcazaba and Gibralfaro ticket costs €10, but the combined visit needs more time than this itinerary allows comfortably.
