Why this walking route is worth doing
This walk solves an awkward planning question: how to enjoy both Flatford and Dedham without driving between them. Manningtree station makes a practical starting point, with the countryside section forming a loop beyond the shared approach to Flatford.
Treat Flatford as the first pause rather than the end of the day. Continue to Dedham for a longer break, then return beside the Stour. If the weather turns or the full distance is too much, the shorter station-to-Flatford out-and-back is the straightforward alternative. The route crosses the Essex–Suffolk boundary; Flatford itself is in Suffolk.
Manningtree → Cattawade Marshes → Flatford → Fen Lane → Dedham → riverside return to Flatford → Manningtree. The shorter option returns from Flatford and is approximately 4 miles / 6.4 km overall.

Follow the route
From the station to Flatford
Use the footpath from the station car-park ramp, pass under the railway and join the riverside route through Cattawade towards Flatford.

Flatford to Dedham
After exploring the Flatford riverside, follow the path by the visitor car park and the road-parallel path to Fen Lane. Continue over the bridge and through the meadows towards Dedham.

Return along the Stour
Leave Dedham on the signed Flatford path near Dedham Hall. Follow the river and meadows back to Bridge Cottage, then retrace the station approach.
