About Beaumaris Castle
Edward I planned the castle as part of his conquest of north Wales after 1282. Plans were likely drawn up in 1284, but a lack of money delayed building until 1295, after the uprising led by Madog ap Llywelyn.
A large workforce toiled in the early years under James of St George. Then Edward's campaigns in Scotland drew money away and work halted, resuming only after an invasion scare in 1306. The result is a castle that was never completed, which makes its story especially interesting to explore.
