About Conwy Castle
Conwy Castle in North Wales was built by Edward I during his conquest of Wales, between 1283 and 1287. It was part of a larger scheme to create the walled town of Conwy, and the castle and town defences together cost around £15,000, a huge sum at the time.
Over the following centuries the castle played a part in several wars. It held out against Madog ap Llywelyn's siege in the winter of 1294 to 1295, gave Richard II temporary shelter in 1399, and was held for several months in 1401 by forces loyal to Owain Glyndŵr.
