About Rhuddlan Castle

Edward I chose Rhuddlan in Denbighshire as the site for a castle in 1277, and much of the work was overseen by master mason James of Saint George. It was built at the same time as Flint Castle and was not finished until 1282.

The castle was part of Edward's effort to secure his conquest of Wales. It briefly served as his residence, and his daughter Elizabeth is thought to have been born here. Today it is owned by Cadw, part of the Welsh Government.
