About Derby Museum and Art Gallery

Derby Museum and Art Gallery was founded in 1879 alongside Derby Central Library, in a new building designed by Richard Knill Freeman and given to the town by Michael Thomas Bass. The Art Gallery itself opened a few years later, in 1882.

A highlight is the gallery of paintings by Joseph Wright of Derby. There is also a large display of Royal Crown Derby and other porcelain from the area. Further displays cover archaeology, natural history, geology, military collections and world cultures.
