About Nottingham Castle

Nottingham Castle is a ducal mansion from the Stuart Restoration era, built on the site of a Norman castle begun in 1068. During the medieval period the castle was greatly expanded and became an important royal fortress and occasional royal home.

By the 16th century it was in decline, and after the English Civil War in 1651 the original castle was demolished, apart from its walls and gates. The site sits on Castle Rock, with 130-foot cliffs to the south and west dominating the city skyline.
