About Hardwick Hall
Hardwick Hall was built between 1590 and 1597 for Bess of Hardwick, to designs by the architect Robert Smythson. It is a leading example of the Elizabethan prodigy house and one of the earliest English takes on the Renaissance style, which had gradually spread from Florence.
The house appeared at a time when fortifying a home was no longer needed or permitted, and its design reflects that new freedom. It also has a 20th-century story: the British Army's 1st Parachute Brigade was formed at Hardwick Hall in 1941.
