About Stirling Castle
Stirling Castle ranks among the largest and most important castles in Scotland, both in history and in architecture. It stands on a crag of hard volcanic rock, part of the Stirling Sill, with steep cliffs on three sides that gave it a natural defence few sites could match.
Its position mattered because it watched over what was, until the 1890s, the lowest crossing point of the River Forth. That made it a key stronghold from very early times. Most of the main buildings that visitors see today were built in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the castle was at the height of its royal importance.
