Fondée vers 1145 à l'emplacement d'un ermitage du XIe siècle, l'abbaye fait partie des trois grandes abbayes cisterciennes de Provence, appelées les " trois sœurs de Provence " avec Sénanque et Le Thoronet. Après des débuts modestes, d'importants travaux donnent naissance à une église et des bâtiments conventuels, dont l'essor ne cesse alors de croître, participant au développement de l'économie locale par la construction d'infrastructures (routes, canaux d'irrigation) ou par l'agriculture. Sa prospérité et son influence sur tout le territoire sont accrues par la protection des comtes de Provence, qui prennent le relais de la famille des Baux, suscitant la jalousie et les griefs des ecclésiastiques dépendants de l'abbaye de Montmajour dont les moines finissent par séquestrer puis chasser leurs confrères de Silvacane à la fin du XIIIe siècle. D'expression essentiellement romane, la pureté de ses lignes, l'équilibre des volumes et des proportions en font un lieu de sérénité et de lumière. L'abbaye, gérée depuis 2008 par la commune de La Roque d'Anthéron, accueille des expositions d'art contemporain, qui jouent avec la lumière, ainsi que de nombreux concerts qui mettent en valeur l’acoustique exceptionnelle du site.
